Leadership

Being a leader requires more than just telling people what to do. It also requires you to put forward a vision for the organization, and to stick to it. Employees need to know what they are working toward. It is the job of the employer to set forward the aims of the company, and foster a particular philosophy that the employees can buy into and thereby increase productivity in the workplace.

Management

Employees don’t want to be belittled, and they want to feel as though their job matters. Make sure that your managers have excellent management skills; they need to know what makes the employees tick in order to ensure that they fulfill their potential.

Communication

In many companies, the first time that employees hear about decisions from above is when they are affected by them. This has the potential to be highly disruptive, with many people becoming disillusioned with their company as a result. To avoid such problems, it is important to ensure that your employees have a voice, that where a decision is likely to affect them, they are consulted and have a chance to air their views. When an individual has their voice heard, they will feel as though the business cares about them.

Consistency

It is not enough merely to say what you are trying to do; it is vital that you then try to follow it through. All too often, employees are given an outline of the aims of a company, only to see those aims altered after a few weeks. This leads to confusion, and a confused workforce is less likely to maintain productivity in the workplace. Ensure you avoid this issue by staying true to your company; stick to the aims that you have outlined.

Stress Breeds Innovation

It is very easy to slip into your comfort zone when you’re working and, at times, this can be very helpful in allowing us to recharge our batteries. However, stay there for too long and it breeds complacency. It is only when we are in a heightened state of stress that we will push ourselves further, leading to innovation and progress. Push your employees as far as possible, then allow them time in their comfort zone to recover; their productivity in the workplace will improve as a result, and so your company will prosper.

Know the Limits

Whilst stress aids productivity, it is vital that you observe your employees’ limits. Place somebody under stressful conditions for too long and they will overstretch themselves. Make sure that you monitor your employees; if they start to show the signs of being overloaded, allow them to return to their comfort zone.

We’ve all been there; we are told by our employer that the company has certain values that we all need to push towards in order to maintain productivity in the workplace; or that we should conduct ourselves in a certain way in the office, only to discover that the manager regularly disregards their own advice. The response of the employees tends to vary from disillusionment to anger; why should I do this when not even the boss does it?

The Consequences

Clearly, this is counterproductive, and many businesses have suffered because what they say is out of step with what they do. For a company to succeed, it needs everybody to be working together to achieve the aims of the organization.

What Can Be Done?

The solution is very simple; practice what you preach. If you decide on a particular set of aims or philosophy that your company is going to adhere to, make sure that you stick to it. The biggest advantage to this approach is that it will ensure that your employees are able to remain focused and productivity in the workplace is maintained; if your aims are constantly changing, they provide little guidance to the employee who is trying to solve problems. By keeping your message consistent, your organization maintains its integrity; the values that your company professes are borne out in observable behavior.

Clearly, this does not make for a productive workplace. A good manager will ensure that the employees engage with the company, and can do so in the following ways:

Give Employees Focus

Employees need a clear sense of direction when they are undertaking a task. This will ensure that they are well aware of what is required and so they are able to focus fully on the job that they have to complete. Obviously, an employee with focus is far more of an asset to the company than one who is disinterested, or confused. Ensure that your managers are capable of giving clear instructions so that your employees have a clear target to aim for. This definitely improves productivity in the workplace when employees know where they’re going.

Stretch the Employees

It is all too easy for people to settle into their comfort zones, and whilst this is unlikely to harm your company, it is unlikely to improve the business, meaning that it never quite fulfills its potential. In order to improve the company it is necessary to push the employees to their limit and take them outside of their comfort zone. It is important, however, not to push them too far; in doing so, they may lose confidence in their abilities. A good manager will know where to push and where to hold.

Treat the Employees as People

It is all too easy to fall into the trap of treating employees as cogs in a machine, yet in doing so we foster resentment. People are far more likely to work well for you if you are capable of relating to them, understanding their point of view and treating them as equals. A manager with good interpersonal skills is vital to maximizing productivity in the workplace.

Eagles renew themselves. You must continue developing and renewing your abilities to keep up with the ever-changing world. Never get complacent. Always develop yourself and remember that there is always one aspect in your life that can benefit from self-development.
