Don’t Work Harder, Work Smarter

Andy Core is an expert in Work-Life Balance, Wellbeing, and Peak Human Performance

Being a hard worker is a great quality, but working hard shouldn’t take a toll on the enjoyment you get out of life. The key to achieving success without taking up all your time and energy is to work smarter, not harder.

There may be ways of combining time-consuming tasks

There may be ways of combining
time-consuming tasks

Working smarter is based on getting what you need to get done without harming your own mental wellbeing, health, or relationships. Working too hard can lead to stress, and to your body and mind breaking down. The result is that you can’t get caught up, even when you’re putting in extra hours. You drag yourself down further and further until there’s nothing left to give.

If you’re in a vicious cycle of hard work and not enough results, it may be time to take a step back and figure out what you can do better.

For instance, maybe you would benefit from taking a half-hour break to eat a healthy lunch, rather than trying to grab a quick burger while you work. In the new scenario, it is very possible that you will be more productive and get more work done than you had when you didn’t take a break.

Another way to work smarter is to allow yourself breaks throughout the day. If stress gets to be too much, it becomes more difficult to concentrate and complete your work in a satisfactory manner. Taking a few minutes to get some fresh air or take a quick rejuvenating walk may be all you need to finish your work more quickly, and do it better.
