If productivity in the workplace is to be maintained, employees need to operate at a certain level. Whenever we are faced with a situation that we have to cope with, whether that be at work or otherwise, we will fall into one of three stress zones; these are the comfort zone, stretch zone or panic zone. It is vitally important that your managers are able to determine which zone your employees have entered so that they can act accordingly.

Comfort Zone

If a person is within their comfort zone, they will feel very relaxed and stable. Usually, this is when the employee is doing a very routine job that they are no longer challenged by. Whilst your employees will be happiest in this state, they are less likely to be innovative or push themselves, which may stifle their productivity and, so, the development of your company.

Stretch Zone

This is the ideal zone for an employee to be in. They still feel comfortable, but are no longer completely at ease. The job that they are doing is challenging them, forcing them to come up with new ideas and solutions to problems. This is where a person will be in their most productive state and during this time, they will contribute the most productivity in the workplace. Whilst it is likely to tire your employee out if they remain in this zone for too long, you want to ensure that they are within this stress level throughout most of the day.

Panic Zone

This is where management is key. It is very easy for a person to stray from the stretch zone into the panic zone, but the consequences of doing so may be catastrophic. An employee in the panic zone is likely to be overstretched and unable to cope with the demands of work. Their confidence will decrease and their comfort zone will shrink. This can be very damaging to your business.

A good man manager will ensure that your employees spend as long as possible in the stretch zone, where they have just the right amount of stress to ensure that their level of productivity in the workplace remains high.

How to Reduce Stress and Increase Productivity in the Workplace

A stressful workplace is fraught with tension, and can be a very unpleasant place to be. Productivity in the workplace can seriously suffer. People snapping at one another and pushing themselves to the limit for an extended period of time does little to create a healthy working environment, which will inevitably have a negative effect on your business. Consider taking these steps in order to foster a productive, calmer working environment.

Organize Team Building Exercises

It is becoming something of standard practice, but its importance should not be underestimated. People need to have a bit of time off work to refuel, and team-building days are a great opportunity to give your employees a bit of time off, whilst trying to foster good relationships between them. If you choose the right activity, you will soon see dramatic improvements in your employees’ productivity.

Non-Uniform Day

Many businesses see a great benefit in having one day every week where the employees can dress down. Psychologically, it is a way in which the employees are able to remind themselves that they are human and not just suited robots in the workplace. Your employees will enjoy the chance to show off their unique styles in the office.

Relaxation Time

Clearly, you do not want to give your employees lots of time off. However, allowing them to have a bit of down time during the day is vital to enabling them to recharge their batteries. Consider giving your employees a little bit longer at lunch, or allow them to break up the afternoon and you will see that the levels of productivity in the workplace will remain high throughout the day.

Do not neglect your employees; you want them to be working at a high level of productivity in the workplace throughout the day.

What?

Convention speakers emphasise that stress in the workplace is an important issue that must be taken seriously by employers if they hope to have a productive and efficient workforce. Not all stress is negative, and in small amounts may even enhance the performance of an individual. However, excessive amounts of stress in the workplace must be avoided.

Why?

Around 1 in 5 members of the working population will suffer from stress, resulting in over 105 billion working days lost annually. In the UK alone, this costs employers at least $1.89 billion per year.

Although a serious matter, it is a problem that can be prevented and overcome by investing in the wellbeing of staff. Statistics show that for every $1.50 invested in employee wellbeing there can be seen a return of $4.50 in improved efficiency and productivity.

How?

As an employer, you should make every effort to try to minimize the negative effects of stress in the workplace. There are many strategies that can be taken to achieve this. Often a combination of both individual approaches and a whole group approach can be the most effective. Convention speakers highlight the importance of encouraging:

  • Organization
  • Teamwork
  • Optimism
  • Physical exercise and healthy eating
  • Work-life balance
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Independence

Convention speakers state that by taking simple steps to improve the well being of employees the disastrous effects of stress in the workplace can be greatly reduced, resulting in the enhanced performance of the team as a whole.

In order to alleviate stress instantly, try breathing deeply!

In order to alleviate stress instantly,
try breathing deeply!

Learning some relaxation techniques will surely help you with stress management. So whenever you find yourself feeling stressed, here are a few tips you can try in order to handle stress.

Breathe slowly and deeply. Research shows that by breathing deeply for a few minutes you’ll be able to calm your nerves and domesticate the stress. Another benefit of breathing deeply to alleviate stress is that you can employ this technique easily anywhere whether it’s your office, at home, at a park etc. Doctors recommend that you should aim to relax one muscle at a time as you breathe out. You can start with any muscle group you want like your shoulders. Just move through different muscle groups till you feel relaxed.

Live in the moment. Learn to focus on the present, not the past or the future. Worrying or stressing over things from your past or your future is completely unnecessary. To avoid such situations simply focus on the tasks at hand or the current moment. Quit stressing yourself out for no reason.

Keep your problems in perspective. Whenever you’re feeling stressed out, think about the things that you should be grateful. When you get stressed you tend to solely focus on that particular problem. Instead of that try focusing on things that will remind you that no matter what the circumstances might be like at present, nevertheless you are blessed.

Morning Routine

What allows for a stable mind that can increase productivity in the workplace, are daily routines that tune you into. There is a certain level of productivity that you gain when you are tuned into yourself and focused on what you want to achieve. Get into the habit of waking up very early in the morning and calming yourself. Read an inspirational passage or if you like meditation, get into it before everything starts.

This morning routine allows you as an employee to be very productive in the workplace because you will be well rested and focused. You will stand out from the rest and it will be easy for management to notice you and your performance.

Before Work

Make sure you are early to work every day. Ensure that you are there in time to have some time to yourself. Get grounded by clearing your mind and thoughts so you can focus on the day’s tasks. You need to be conscious about your environment and what you want to achieve that day. It is important that you block out other distractions so that you stay focused on the goals you have.

Make sure you know what needs to be accomplished during the day and devote the greater time and energy to those tasks that seem tedious. Avoid leaving them for the last minute.
