Why is it that we constantly hear doctors advocating a good night sleep? According to scientists sleep is vital for restoring and sustaining physical and mental health. This mainly has to do with the particular functions and processes our body and brain carry out whilst we are asleep which otherwise our bodies won’t be able to perform.
During sleep our consciousness isn’t entirely stationary. Our brain is rather active and goes through two major phases of sleep, repeatedly. The first stage is known as Rapid Eye Movement and the second is known as Non- Rapid Eye Movement. Depending on the amount of light that we are surrounded by, our body’s internal clock adjusts when we should sleep and how we’ll be able to sleep. Naturally, when it gets dark your brain flushes out certain hormones whose sole purpose is to get you to sleep. On the other hand when we are exposed to light these hormones are suppressed and other set of hormones are releases which help us to stay awake.
Lack of proper sleep will lead to fatigue and severe mood swings. Moreover, it will also affect your memory, cognition and attention. So, it’s sufficed to say that you should aim to get ample sleep daily in order to maintain optimal health.
