Pressure, tension and stress

When one is under pressure or stress, our bodies releases the hormone cortisol which is responsible for triggering cravings for junk foods that are loaded with sugar, salt and fat. This hormonal imbalance caused by stress causes emotional eaters to completely go nuts over food and propels them to seek for the worst of junk foods in order to set abate their hunger and cravings. Hence if stress in your life isn’t tamed properly, it is highly likely you’ll turn to food to alleviate stress.

Emotions that are not dealt with properly – Instead of dealing with their emotions such as anger, depression, boredom, embarrassment, fear etc through healthy means, emotional eaters resort to eating as a temporary fix to suppress their feelings. While food will help you to numb or block out those emotions temporarily, it certainly won’t help you in the long run. In fact, the guilt of the overeating will bring on more stress and depression, which will make you want to stuff your face again!

Social gatherings

Eating out with your friends and family is an open invitation to overeating. Since everyone around you is eating, it simply makes emotional eaters comfortable enough to indulge without feeling guilty.

Listed below are a few major health problems that are caused due to being stressed:

Stress leads to asthma. Stress is known to really exacerbate asthma. Some researchers state that a pregnant mother suffering from chronic stress puts her baby at a risk for developing asthma. The study also suggests that parents, who are frequently stressed out, put their kids at risk for being stressed as well and ultimately at risk for developing asthma.

Stress can make you pack on the pounds. Stress tends to make you simply obese. Stress forces our bodies to release the hormone cortisol in excessive amounts and this is the culprit for one putting on extra weight particularly in the abdomen area. Moreover, excess fat in the belly tends to pose greater health risks than fat on the lower body.

Stress causes heart disease. Researchers suggest that stressed out individuals are at a higher risk of suffering from high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, stroke, heart attack and other heart problems. Additionally, stress seems to have a straight effect on blood vessels and the heart. Stress can lead to other problems that can indirectly affect your heart such as smoking, drinking etc.
