The Usual Culprits Of Emotional Eating!

Andy Core is an expert in Work-Life Balance, Wellbeing, and Peak Human Performance.

The following are the most common causes that trigger emotional eating:

Stress triggers emotional eating as it releases the hormone cortisol!

releases the hormone cortisol!

Pressure, tension and stress

When one is under pressure or stress, our bodies releases the hormone cortisol which is responsible for triggering cravings for junk foods that are loaded with sugar, salt and fat. This hormonal imbalance caused by stress causes emotional eaters to completely go nuts over food and propels them to seek for the worst of junk foods in order to set abate their hunger and cravings. Hence if stress in your life isn’t tamed properly, it is highly likely you’ll turn to food to alleviate stress.

Emotions that are not dealt with properly – Instead of dealing with their emotions such as anger, depression, boredom, embarrassment, fear etc through healthy means, emotional eaters resort to eating as a temporary fix to suppress their feelings. While food will help you to numb or block out those emotions temporarily, it certainly won’t help you in the long run. In fact, the guilt of the overeating will bring on more stress and depression, which will make you want to stuff your face again!

Social gatherings

Eating out with your friends and family is an open invitation to overeating. Since everyone around you is eating, it simply makes emotional eaters comfortable enough to indulge without feeling guilty.

Fad diets never work out and will simply fail you big time in the long run!

Fad diets never work out and will
simply fail you big time in the
long run!

Fad-diets, diet pills or extreme diets will always fail you sooner or later and the reasons behind are:

They cut out essential macronutrients.  Fad diets that eradicate an entire group of macronutrients such as protein diets or High-carb or zero fat diets, are unrealistic, unhealthy and will simply fail you in the long run. The best way to lose weight and maintain it is to practice moderation. Cutting out a singular macronutrient completely will lead to nutritional and hormonal imbalances which can actually cause you to put on extra weight after a while.

You’ll lose weight but you’ll have trouble keeping it off.  When it comes to extreme diets that reduce your caloric intake severely they only work for a short time period.  Once switch back to normal eating, you will surely gain the some of the weight back. Moreover, you’ll put on the weight more quickly since restricting calories slows down your metabolism.

You feel as if you are deprived. Since fad diets make you feel deprived, you are more likely to cheat on such diet plans. Cheating once in a while won’t do you much harm, but when it comes to fad diets individuals feel the need to cheat frequently. The binging and under-eating cycle will put too much stress on your body and will wreak havoc on your metabolism.
