Focus on Your Strengths to Achieve Your Goals

I know the movie is old news, but there is a part in Napoleon Dynamite that I love. It’s the scene where he discusses his lack of skills, which makes him ineligible to take a girl out. Although all of us aren’t as clueless as Napoleon, I think that many people struggle to know what they’re good at. Especially at a young age, many people have no idea what they are naturally inclined to do.

This is partially due to the fact that most of our education has been spent fulfilling requirements that the system has set in place, and while these aren’t bad requirements, they stifle some aspect of independent creativity that might enable us more to know what our skills are. Another reason for this is that, learning who you are takes time and reflection.  You have to experience life a bit before you know where you fit in. How you were raised could very well be different then how you should live to be your best self.

There’s a quote by Baz Luhrmann in his song “Everybody’s Free” that makes this challenge less daunting, “Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t.”

The most freeing aspect about this quote is that the goal shouldn’t be to know what you want to do with your life or having everything nailed down. The goal is to be interesting. So open up your awareness and try things that you might like. Make a point to experience new things. Be interesting and find what interests you. If you do this, you’ll find your passions and community. But while you’re out living your adventures, make sure to be yourself.

Chase Your Future Self

Andy Core is an expert in Work-Life Balance, Wellbeing, and Peak Human Performance.

“Every day, every week, every month and every year of my life my hero is always 10 years away. I’m never going to be my hero … that’s just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing.” -Matthew McConaughey

The expectations and assumptions that others have for you are numerous, diverse and impossible to achieve. And if you try, you’ll only lose yourself in the process.

You are not doing yourself a favor by competing with other people. So rather than exhausting the impossible choose instead to  compete with yourself to give you goals that make you a better person. You should try to make yourself the best version of yourself  without focusing on what others are doing.  Focus on yourself and your family. Do things that are best for your health and career. Competing with other people is a waste of your valuable time and energy.

When you compete with yourself, you’ll improve your life because you’ll work to achieve your goals and strive to be even more successful. But this is success based on your standards. Not anyone elses.

Be encouraged by what you achieve and look at how far you’ve come from where you used to be. Most importantly, keep working on it. Set realistic goals and be patient as you chase yourself in the future, because you know that things are only getting better, while at the same time realizing that perfection is impossible. What’s important is the pursuit.
