Performance of an individual is a product of ability and motivation. A keynote speaker tells us that ability is a long-term challenge to improve, depending on many factors, whereas motivation can be easily maximized in just a few key steps.

Motivation in the workplace has been intensively researched and many theories on its maximization exist. Maslow’s “A Theory of Human Motivation,” states that in order to fully motivate an individual and maximize their potential, their hierarchy of needs must first be fulfilled, one tier at a time: Physiological, Safety, Social, Esteem and Self-Actualization.

Physiological needs comprise the first tier. In the workplace, this concerns the individual’s pay. In it’s most simple form, motivation in the workplace can be achieved with a competitive salary. The next tier to satisfy is safety. An employee who feels physically and financially safe at work, in addition to feeling that their health and wellbeing is accounted for will be more motivated. Next, our keynote speaker states that the social needs of an individual must be considered: if an employee has a sense of belonging and value in the workplace then their motivation will increase. This leads on to the individual’s esteem needs as feeling valued and respected by others encourages self-esteem and self-respect, resulting in self-confidence and increased motivation. Finally, self-actualization, the idea that “what a man can be, he must be.” By fulfilling all other tiers, an individual will be motivated to the point that they strive to accomplish everything they can, maximizing their performance and ultimately the performance of the workplace as a whole.
