“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.”
― Eckhart TolleA New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose

Reflect on how you interact with the world. For instance, when someone asks you how you are doing, do you automatically react with a positive or a negative answer? When you are by yourself in the rare quiet moments of your day, do you start thinking about how stressed and unhappy you are, or do you focus on what’s good in your life and say a quiet thank you. When your face is at rest, is your brow furrowed and your jaw clenched or is your expression peaceful with the hint of a smile? When you dream, are you fighting, running and fearful, or are you exploring, experiencing and inventing?

In life there are always going to be negative situations you have to face. Be it a personal habit, a work situation, a family emergency or just the general feeling of being overwhelmed. But rather than becoming a negative person from these negative situations, it’s best to learn how to handle them in the best way while still managing to stay positive.

The best advice is to define your day based on what you do and how you reacted rather than by what someone else did or said to you. Because in the end, the only thing you can attempt to control in life is your reaction. All other factors are outside of your grasp.

Its also important to remember that what we say and believe usually ends up being the true. Your thoughts, whether positive or negative, end up fulfilling themselves. And our brains can be trained to form a certain perspective. If you consistently see life through a negative lens, that’s what you’ll continue to see and viceversa. So as Cat Stevens says, “And if you want to live high, live high. And if you want to live low, live low.”

Maintaining a positive reaction throughout your day requires you to focus on the positive things in life. Life will improve as your thinking improves. If you have no real problems, but you’ve trained yourself to think negatively about life, then you’ll be less happy than a person with real problems and a good attitude.

You’re perspective equals your reality. Make it one you want to live.
